Sacred Heart Girls’ College has a long sporting tradition with many sporting opportunities currently offered. All students are encouraged to become involved in a sporting endeavour while at school. Your daughter will gain fitness, enjoyment and learn a range of skills, whatever her ability. We are committed to offering all of our students opportunities to participate in a range of individual and team sports, both at a competitive and non-competitive level. Girls are encouraged and supported to try a sport(s) for the first time. We actively encourage the development of attitude and self-discipline, and practices of safe participation in sport.
We are fortunate to have teachers, parents, outside volunteers and students who coach and/or manage our sports teams all year round. The college believes it is important to have an appropriate adult involved with each sports team. We are committed to assisting all coaches and managers and participate in coach development training where appropriate. We also link with Sport Taranaki and various local sporting organisations to offer sport-specific coaching if requested. The school has a proud history of local, North Island and national successes.
All students, parents, coaches and managers are expected to adhere to the college’s Code of Conduct. Students and parents agree to this when they fill in the required annual Sports Registration Form in Term 1. This form also outlines the expected cost of each code for that year.
If you have a particular interest outside of the mainstream sports, please see the Sports Department. We will endeavour to support you where we can, and also ensure your successes are reccognised.
There are other sporting codes on offer available through Taranaki Secondary Schools Sport Association (TSSSA) for students in Years 9 -13. Please refer to the TSSSA page. Sports on offer at Sacred Heart include: Adventure Racing, Basketball, Canoe Polo, Cricket, Football, Hockey, Netball, Running, Rugby, Touch, Volleyball and Waka Ama.
We are currently looking for Coaches and Managers in many codes. If you would like to help out we would love to have you on board. Please contact the Sports Department now.
The following forms are to be downloaded and filled in by hand.
Annual Sports Days are held for Swimming, Athletics and Cross Country. All students are encouraged to participate in these days at their own appropriate level. During these days, students also represent their House and can gain points through chants and dressing in house colours. The competition is both fun as well as serious for those intending to represent the College at Taranaki and national competitions.

Years 9-13
Sports exchanges with our fellow Catholic colleges from around the North Island are highlights in the sporting calendar. Mission Cup and Te Toa are annual competitions that our senior netball and hockey students compete in. Each Sacred Heart Girls’ College in the North Island has a chance to host the event on a rotational basis.
We also try and look for other schools to have an exchange with to cover a variety of sporting codes, depending on the competition schedules.
Years 7 & 8
Annually we send some of our Year 7 & 8 teams to the Aims Games in Tauranga. This is not a tournament of excellence, but more a chance for our teams to play against schools from throughout New Zealand and the Pacific Islands. Teams are graded after the first two days of competition, so it allows for an enjoyable week for all our girls who attend.
In addition, all our Year 7 & 8 sports teams participate in an annual Highlands/FDMC exchange in Term 3. We also include Badminton, Indoor Bowls, Chess, Debating, Cross Country and Mountain Biking, so nearly the entire Year 7 & 8 group can attend.
These events are for students in Year 9-13 and are ogranised by Taranaki Secondary School Sports Association. During the year, the Sports Co-ordinator receives information of forthcoming events. This information will be posted in the daily notices and Sports Notice Board in the Events Centre. It is the responsibility of the students to keep informed and attend meetings if they are interested in participating.
